An Incredible Achievement
“I was originally shopping for a T + A SD 3100 HV, which is 21K more expensive than the DMS-800PV. However, I needed a new preamp (I ended up going with a T + A P3000 HV), and thus my budget was cut. I started looking at streaming DACs in the 10 – 20K range, and this unit caught my eye. I wanted something that could handle DSD512 at a minimum and be able to play files stored on a USB flash drive, fully balanced, and headless (not needing a computer, internet connection, or phone app to run it). This unit meets all my needs, feature-wise, but the sonic attributes blew me away. My former digital setup was an Oppo BDP-105 for high res music files and a Wadia 861b CD player for Red Book CDs. The DMS800PV is vastly superior in every regard. All the things we look for are just better: soundstage, imaging, bass slam, resolution, air, etc. Not a hint of fatigue. DSD 512 files downloaded from Native DSD are simply incredible. I also appreciate that DSD64 can be upsampled to DSD256, and PCM files can be upsampled if need be. I love that I don’t need to be hooked up to the internet to run this unit (many other companies require this), as I only play music from USB drives. If you want streaming from Tidal you can certainly have it. This unit is feature-laden, but I’m a simple man and find no use for such things. I run this with a preamp, so I can’t comment on direct-to-amplifier sonics. This DAC has true DSD processing as well. Nothing is converted to PCM inside the DAC chip. It is amazing. A true bargain in the world of digital. This baby does it all. And the manual is the best I’ve ever read. Covers everything and has all the specs you want. I also love the looks of it. Very basic but elegant. I want my money going toward what’s in the chassis rather than expensive jewelry. Customer service is amazing. Billy Wright is super fast at answering questions. He’s great. Bravo, Cary, you hit it out of the park with this component! I would buy again in a heartbeat.”
